I've started draping stamped clay "fabric" around my salt women, which grace the middle of dining tables ready to serve salt and pepper. My sister Julia had the idea when she thought some might prefer them clothed. It took me a while, but I finally realized it was just an opportunity to make patterns! I LOVE making patterns. I could stamp all day. This one (in photo above) will be in the kiln this week. I'll probably glaze it in a beautiful turquoise glaze that breaks to white over patterns.
Another realization: I'm a social artist. I made eight new pieces while sitting at the First Friday Ukiah Artwalk in early February making salt women while people watched. Some sat down and tried making their own things with a bit of clay. A woman who's an artist herself, who had a show just then on bird houses, suggested I make birds with salt bowls. Hmmmm yes ... good idea. Meanwhile, people were buying my already glazed salt women — to new homes in Chicago and New Hampshire. I prefer writing and designing reports and websites while alone, and love making art around other people.
The draping is very cool. The fluidity of the "fabric" gives the figures a heightened aliveness. Really neat! As a costume designer I especially love that!~ Lisa
